UCF College of Medicine graduates honored Dr. Sergio Salazar, an internal medicine specialist at UCF Pegasus Health and their assistant professor, with the honor of leading them in the Hippocratic Oath at Friday’s graduation.

The oath, first written in antiquity, is named for the renowned Greek physician Hippocrates, considered the father of western medicine. In taking the oath, physicians pledge to treat patients to the best of their ability and do no harm.

“The Hippocratic Oath is a contract that physicians make with each other and their community,” Dr. Deborah German, vice president for medical affairs and dean told students at commencement.

She explained that each year, students select in a “tremendous honor…a faculty physician who is a mentor and role model for the compassionate care of others” to lead them in reciting the Hippocratic Oath.

The 55 students in the graduating Class of 2014 chose Dr. Salazar.

Because some of the graduates have physician family members, Dr. German invited all doctors in attendance to stand and retake the Hippocratic Oath. About a dozen relatives joined College of Medicine faculty physicians – and UCF’s newest doctors – in reciting the oath.
