Central Florida has had several confirmed diagnoses of dengue (pronounced den’ gee) fever, the first locally acquired illness reported in the area since the1960s.

Dr. Maria Cannarozzi, an internal medicine specialist at UCF Pegasus Health and an associate professor at the UCF College of Medicine, suggests ways to avoid contracting dengue fever. First, apply DEET or Permethrin to your clothing, and be pro-active if you travel in  countries where the fever is prevalent, such as Puerto Rico.

Dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes common to tropical locations and cannot be contracted from person to person.  Dengue-carrying mosquitoes will bite throughout the day, including indoors, in shady areas, or when the weather is cloudy.
